I was checking out the Newsvine Leaderboard. We don't have a similar thing at Digg, so it was interesting. Looks like Newsvine is much smaller than I thought.

Stats from the past one week:

Popularity rank - 224
Popular contributions = 0, Rank = 124
Popular comments = 6, Rank = 102
Watchlist adds = 0, Rank = 224
Articles = 1, Rank = 98 (Woot! Top 100!!)
Seeds = 0, Rank = 1052
Comments = 85, Rank = 23 (WooT! WooT!! Top 25!!)
Votes Received = 75, Rank = 122
Comments Received = 10, Rank = 147

Interesting, huh?

1 article is all it took for me to break the top 100. At this rate, a few more good articles and I'll be in the top 10.
0 seeds gives me a ranking of 1052. Very disproportionately low. Seems to be a lot of folks around here who seed more than they write. Ya know, kinda like Digg. hehehe.

Still can't believe that I am the 224th most popular contributor on Newsvine. Yet people give me flak here.

Checked today, and now I am

#213 on the most popularity rank list! Woot!

#65 for "popular comments"
#41 for "articles" (with 1 article, it was #98)
#109 for "votes recieved"
#20 for "comments"

today, I've reached #81 for "Votes recieved"
#53 for popular comments. (I have a total of 11).

Looks like quite easy to break into the top 100 in many categories.

I'm even #53 on the "popular contributions" list. And all it took was 1 article that got 5 votes.

For @!$%#s and giggles, I applied the "All Time" filter to my stats though I've been here only less than 2 weeks.

My overall popularity rank came to 3747. This tells me that over the lifetime of Newsvine, there have been less than 4000 people who actively did anything (seed/write/comment)

        Popular contributions = 0 and rank = 1960
This seems buggy. Last week it showed me I had 1 popular contribution. My first article with 5 votes. Now it's showing me 0? That ain't cool.

        Popular comments:
If I apply last week filter, it says I have 11 popular comments.
But with 'All time" filter, it says 3 comments. What the heck? How's that work? From 11 to 3??
Rank here for all time is 1301

Articles written = 1 for all time and rank = 2160.
Again what the heck? If I apply one week, it says 2 articles. And i do have 2 articles. Somethin's buggy, mate.

Seeds = 0 and rank = 14255 with all time filter.

comments = 46 and rank = 1148 with all time ilter.
comments = 114 and rank = 13 (woot! top 15!) with last week filter.
This is bizarro! Shouldn't all time stats be more than the last week stats?? I don't get it!!

        Votes recieved:
        last week - 133 and rank = 77
        all time - 56 and rank = 1762

        comments recieved
        all time = 10 and rank = 1696
        last week = 9 and rank = 160.

The "past week" stats are updated every day. The "last three months" and "all time" stats seem to be udpated once a week. You should see them update either tonight or tomorrow, if it holds to the same schedule that it has been in the past.

But, how can the all time stats be less than the one week numbers? I don't get it.

Because any of your stats accumulated over the past week have not been calculated into the all-time or 3-month stats yet. Let's say the all-time and 3-month stats update at 3 AM on Saturday morning, and then don't update again until 3 AM the next Saturday. But the weekly stats update every day. Let's also assume you've been a user for 2 weeks, beginning right after the last weekly update (3 AM Saturday), with the following posting habits:

            week 1 of membership - articles: 0, seeds: 2, comments: 15, votes: 35
            week 2 of membership - articles: 3, seeds: 5, comments: 45, votes: 60

For all of week 1 of membership, your all-time and 3-months will all show 0. Each day at 3 AM, your week stats will update with whatever you posted during week 1. At 3 AM of the second Saturday of membership, your total week 1 stats will roll into your 3-month and all-time stats. Now, for the remainder of the week 2, your 3-month and all-time stats will show only that activity that occurred during week 1. But if you notice in the contrive example above, you posted many more things in week 2 than in week 1. In this way, it's possible that the weekly stats will show more activity than the all-time stats, just because weeklies are updated many times a week, and the other categories are only updated weekly.

            Make sense now?

I am not in the know on the whole web 2.0 competition thing so fill me ( and the rest of us ) in - what are you getting at here? Do you work for Digg or something? My perception is they are conceptually different because of the article writing.

You seem disturbed that commenting makes you popular. Why make fun of NV for rewarding you for positive contributions? You did one article and your popularity jumped so clearly articles are weighted, which is just product differentiation from Digg, Reddit and Netscape. Is that bad?

NV has about 500K readers a month with probably a 5-6X number of page views, probably nowhere near Digg so it's difficult to establish a metric for comparison. Readers are not participants. On Digg I can get an account in 5 seconds and participate. NV tries to cut down spam by having a delay. So the popularity will not count about 440,000 out of the 500,000 and 55,000 of the registered ones may not be very active. That's like any community.

If you're just consumer advocating, that's cool because everyone likes to know how things work, but you're using too small a data sample to make anything conclusive here.

What you should do is submit an article to NV and to Digg and see how many hits you get for each. I am betting at the lower numbers, let's say 10 votes on NV and 10 on Digg, they are about the same ( my guess; you will get 15 hits tops on your site ) ... so in that sense NV is much smaller but has just as much clout. Because the participants are more active.

I am from Digg - read my "About author" link. But I don't work for them. I wish ;~

I'm not really getting at something. It's just like a personal blog that I thought I'd throw out. I totally digg it that it takes very little effort for me to jump into the top 100 here in many categories. All within a week. That rocks. I even told my buddies on myspace about how cool I am. I am. They agreed too.

I ain't making fun of Newsvine.

How do you know all that stats about Newsvine? 500K per month and stuff? Do you work for Newsvine?

Digg is pretty closed off about how burying/promoting works and who does it ( as you know, being a Digg user ) but Newsvine is fairly open about everything that won't give away their IP ... I asked the Newsvine guys in a comment about a month ago and those were the numbers they gave. You can ask too.

Looks like I've slipped out of the top 25 for the past week in the Comments category. I'm #26 now with 85 comments. But, look at the #1 on that list - 453 comments!! By lauhal. That's incredible! Must be a very dedicated Newsvine user. 453 in a week is 65 comments a day. Let's cut out 10 hours for sleeping/eating/@!$%#ting/showering/misc. and you have 14 hours in a day. 65 comments in 14 hours = 4.5 comments every hour. That's a comment every 13 minutes every day of the week. OMG! That's friggin' awesome. Same person is #1 on the list for "votes received" - a friggin' 1614 votes. Methinks that's mainly because of this article. The #1 in popularity ranking is Killfile who's only got 858 votes. However, if you look at the comments received, it's a whole different story altogether. Killfile is #1 with 728 comments received waaay above the #2 who has only 448. Even further below you'll see lauhal has only 220 comments recieved. Again, methinks that 's becoz of that article mentioned before. Puts Killfile's contribution in perspective. He makes comments that make people think and respond. I've been reading his stuff lately and gotta admit I'm gaining more and more respect for this dude. Didn't think much of him earlier going by his user name. I even put him on my watchlist, something which I learned today. This dude seems like a real journalist. Hats off to you, bro. You rock!

OMFG!! That #1 person for comments made has now reached 498 for the past week. That's 70 per day. 70/14 hours = 5 comments an hour = 1 comment every 12 minutes. Incredible! Must be a very dedicated Newsvine user. The comments received for this person is now 259. Now compare it to Killfile. He has made only 72 comments in the same period but recieved a whopping 663 comments. Now that's what I call quality! I'm gainin' more and more respect for this killfile dude.

No, buddy, I haven't. Why would you assume so? I just happened to read your other article becuz it was on the front page.

I checked out your Digg article. So you are from Digg too? Kewl. Me too. I'm just hanging out here on Newsvine for a little while. Vacationing from digg. There is some good stuff here but then there is also a lot of crap. The current crap that I see is that article "Vote for me?" - it's worse than Digg. 380+ comments that say absolutely nothing. If someone were to judge Newsvine on the basis of that article, they would think that Newsvine is a bunch of narcissist teenagers who like to spout nonsense just for the sake of getting stars. That would've been long dugg down in Digg.

So, question for ya - what does "Gold Rust" mean?

Gold can't rust, so it means I'm a man of contradictions. :P

Actually, I have no idea. I like it because it sounds esoteric.

I was never really active on Digg, but a friend of mine told me about it but I was disgusted at what I saw. Instead of things being dugg down by quality, ideas not popular were actively censored. Since digg is mostly liberal anything a conservative would post would be instantly buried. And I'm not even a conservative.
